If you go looking for Mean Girls references in Our Little Secret—the new Lindsay Lohan Christmas movie that began streaming on Netflix today—you’ll definitely find them.
For one thing, celebrated comedian Tim Meadows, who plays principal in Mean Girls, is also featured in the Netflix film. For another, there’s a scene that closely resembles the famed “Jingle Bell Rock” performance from the Plastics. And, finally, Lohan herself appears to reference one of Mean Girls’s many quotable lines, by doing her best impression of Rachel McAdams asking Cady Heron if she thinks she’s pretty.
Directed by Stephen Herek (best known for his 1989 comedy, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), with a screenplay by Hailey DeDominicis, Our Little Secret stars Lohan as Avery, a woman who is desperate to impress her new boyfriend’s hard-to-please mother (played by Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth). Unfortunately, when she shows up to the Christmas gathering, she comes face-to-face with the ex-love-of-her-life, Logan (Ian Harding). Avery swears Logan to secrecy, still hoping to make a good impression. But old flames are hard to stamp out.
Don’t worry about feeling bad for Avery’s current boyfriend, Cameron (played by Saturday Night Live alum Jon Rudnitsky). He clearly has a thing for his old flame, Sophie (Ash Santos), who unexpectedly shows up for the holidays, too. When Avery points out to Cameron that this other woman is “tall and pretty,” Cameron replies, innocently, “Is she tall? I hadn’t noticed.”
“Oh, so you think she’s pretty?” Lohan fires back.
Mean Girls fans, of course, will remember that Regina George once asked Lohan something very similar, after Lohan thanked her for saying she was pretty.
“So you agree? You think you’re really pretty?”
Now, maybe this is simply a coincidence. But based on Lohan’s tone—which echoes that iconically petty Regina George cadence—I don’t think that it is. Lohan knows Mean Girls just as well as the fans do. She knows what she was doing! Maybe this line wasn’t intended as a Regina George homage in the script, but Lohan made it one with her delivery.
That’s not the only Mean Girls moment in Our Little Secret. Later in the movie, an accidentally-high-out-of-her-mind Lohan nearly makes a fool out of herself at a Christmas Eve sermon. Luckily, a kind soul in the gospel choir comes to her rescue, by encouraging the entire congregation to sing along to “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang. While not a direct reference, it’s certainly reminiscent of the scene in Mean Girls when Lohan saves the day by leading a “Jingle Bell Rock” sing-along.
And let’s not forget about Meadows, aka Principal Duvall, who shows up in Our Little Secret as a family friend named Stan, alongside his on-screen wife Margaret, played by Scrubs actress Judy Reyes.
Netflix is all in on Mean Girls references in Christmas movies this year. Earlier this month, the interent was delighted when Lacey Chabert—who famously played Gretchen Weiners in the 2004 Mean Girls—spots Lohan in the 2022 Netflix movie, Falling for Christmas, and muses, “That’s so funny. That looks just like a girl I went to high school with.”
Mean Girls may be twenty years old, but clearly Netflix is making sure this cinematic masterpiece is never forgotten. That said, Netflix still doesn’t have Mean Girls in its streaming libary. Boo, you whore.
